Thanks to Jamie Dupuis for allowing us to share his gift of music

It is with great sadness that the family of Phillip Hum (1952-2018) announce his unexpected passing on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Health Sciences North in Sudbury. Phillip will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his wife of 42 years, Joan Hum (nee Lee) and his children Jennifer (Barry) and Gregory (Jen). He was a devoted grandfather to Kyle and much anticipated 2nd grandchild, who he hoped would be born on his birthday. He will also be missed by his sister Betty (Morley predeceased) and brothers Andrew (Ling) and Peter (Sylvia), as well as countless nieces and nephews. Phillip moved the family to Sudbury in 1992 and quickly developed a network of friends in the community through both playing and coaching hockey. Phil led an active life and became very involved in a variety of community associations and events. When he wasn’t renovating the house (or someone else’s house), you could always find him at Sudbury Wolves games, playing hockey, ballroom dancing or doing tai chi. He would also volunteer with the Sudbury Chinese Community Association, the Cambrian Theatre Company and the Italian Club in Copper Cliff. He dedicated his time to his family and helping others. It didn’t matter if he’d known you for a long time or had just met you. If you ever needed a helping hand, he was there. Chances are, he has helped you with a home DIY project. Phil will always be remembered for putting a smile on anyone’s face, be it from a witty comment or a lighthearted practical joke. When you were in his company, you were always smiling and laughing. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Phil’s name to Vasculitis Foundation Canada. This foundation has become important to the family after his son, Gregory, was diagnosed with Vasculitis. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements in care of Simple Wishes of the North. (705) 470-7070

Our sincere condolences to Joan, Jennifer and Greg. Phil was a great pal, super minor hockey coach (remember the Ducks !!) and always had a smile and kind words for everybody. Will miss him, particularly at the Wolves games. We’ll keep Phil in our prayers. Be strong.

I shall always remember Phil as a great cheerful guy with lots of stories to share and a good listener at our semi-monthly coffee gathering. What a shock and a heartbreaking loss to us all. He will be remembered as a shining example of how to live the good life that he shared. I extend my deepest condolences to his family, Joan, Jennifer and Greg; we shall all miss him.

I had not seen Phil for a few years, since I stopped playing Monday night hockey. He and I connected for a few hockey goals over the years. He played hockey like he led his life, he enjoyed it and always had a smile on his face, he was always ready to play hard and pass the puck if you were open. Many a Monday night we shared conversation and joke about pretty much anything. To his family I give my deepest condolences, we have all lost something in his passing but have gained much in knowing him.

Very sad to hear. He was always genuinely kind and caring. I’ve always remembered him from my Sudbury days and from my random run-ins in Toronto. My thought and condolences to the family.
